Listening to your body: What is it trying to say?

When there is an imbalance in our body, our body communicates this to us through messages like pain, discomfort, feeling 'off', tightness or lethargy. It's the only way it knows how to get our attention! It may start off as a quiet knowing that something doesn't quite feel right inside. If left unattended, the signal gets louder and louder.

It's very easy in our society to pop some painkillers and get on with our day (as most pain-killer commercials would encourage), but the root cause of the discomfort wasn't addressed! Like the flashing red engine light on a car's dashboard, if we ignore the signal for too long, things can become worse, a lot worse. Pay attention, learn to listen to your body and you can avoid much bigger problems in the future. Don't wait until the engine overheats and you find yourself stuck on the side of the road with a broken down car.

Terry* was feeling tired, irritable and unable to focus well, especially during work. Our initial consult revealed that in the past 6 months he had been waking multiple times per night needing to urinate. Each time he didn’t have much urine in his bladder, but the need to go was always pressing. There was no pain, discomfort or burning sensation whenever he went.

The constant waking however, was disruptive, and he found he was tired during the day, affecting his focus and clarity. Terry's goal was to have a good, restful night sleep and to wake up feeling refreshed and focused.

Terry had been to his local GP on multiple occasions to have this condition and his general health check, specifically ruling out prostate cancer. Results came back clear.

In our session through muscle testing (biofeedback), we found that there was a bacterial presence affecting his bladder. Terry wanted to know what actions could be taken to support rebalancing his urinary system and overall well-being and sleep. He would book in with a GP as soon as possible, with the possibility of taking antibiotics if required, but until he could book in, he wanted to take immediate steps to remedy the bacterial infection.

The following tested for Terry:

1.      Immediately delete all yeast and yeast products from his diet, which was mostly fruit and vegetables however Terry liked to enjoy a few beers with his dinner - the yeast from the beer was feeding the bacterial growth

2.      Intake local Manuka Honey with warm water with slices of ginger – Manuka honey is a natural medicine with strong antibacterial properties

3.      Increase his daily water intake from 7-10 glasses of water to flush out the bacteria as it dies off and is eliminated from the body

We discussed the possibility and preparation for any Herx reaction, which is the body’s reaction to the increased removal of the dying bacteria from the body. Possible symptoms may be fever, rapid heart rate and flushing. We could support the body from avoiding a Herx reaction through pro-biotics, increased garlic in the diet, drinking more water and rest when the body was indicating the need for extra rest time.

Follow up – 3 weeks later.

Terry was feeling much better! His night-time waking was reduced to once per night for the toilet. His sleep was greatly improved and he felt rested and focused during the day. No Herx reaction was experienced and the improvements were experienced before his GP appointment and therefore was no longer necessary.

Thankfully, Terry paid attention to the messages from his body. He took action, came out with a clear action plan specific to his own rebalancing goal and he was able to avoid potential further complications in the future.
